PFAS Water Contamination May Be Greatest On And Near US Military Installations That Use Firefighting Foam

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

Firefighting foam has been washed down into local storm drains for decades polluting local water systems with PFAS forever chemicals

Thursday, October 13, 2022 - PFAS drinking water pollution is being blamed on the use of firefighting foam manufactured by 3M by municipal fire stations, airports, and military bases throughout the country. The PFAS toxins are also found in Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex waterproof clothing, Scotchgard stain repellant used on carpets, draperies, and upholstery, and billions of fast-food wrappers and other packagings. Using these products regularly at home or work further exposes one to carcinogens. On top of that, most people simply throw these products into the trash when their useful life has expired to be dumped into unlined landfills where runoff over time pollutes the local water table, rivers, and lakes. Improperly disposed of PFAS consumer products are pumping a never-ending river of contaminants into our water supply. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) has researched and written extensively on the harmful effects of PFAS forever chemicals on human health. They are at the forefront of forcing the US military to admit that they have polluted local tap water supplies on military bases throughout the United States as well as polluting the surrounding community tap water where millions of American civilians work, live, and play. According to EWG, " Data released last week by the DOD found high levels of PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS and other PFAS in the areas near military bases in Florida, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Washington. The detections were found near Whiting Field Naval Air Station, Fla.; Camp Grayling Army Airfield, Mich.; Willow Grove Naval Air Station, Pa.; Mechanicsburg Naval Inventory Control Point, Pa.; Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Wash.; Joint Base Lewis-McChord -- Yakima Training Ground, Wash.; and Bremerton Naval Base, Wash."

PFAS forever chemicals are invisible, odorless, tasteless, and colorless therefore are easily ignored. The harmful effects to one's health of ingesting these toxins do not manifest themselves for years or even decades in the future when they have bioaccumulated to levels that can develop into cancer. Add to that the five to ten-year latency time for the symptoms of cancer to become apparent and it is hard to trace the origins of one's disease back to the true source. PFAS forever chemicals have strong molecular bonds that make them nearly impossible to degrade due to exposure to high heat or mixing with other chemicals. Once PFAS chemicals are in human cells they stay there and accumulate one's entire lifetime. One of the most insidious consequences of drinking water that contains PFAS forever chemicals is that it can harm the fetus in pregnant women. It is suspected that nearly all children born in the United States today have PFAS in their umbilical cord blood making thousands of children predisposed to developing cancer in later life. PFAS cancer lawsuits are being filed by individuals that have developed cancer or the surviving loved ones of those who have died regardless of the source of one's cancer.
