Farms Near The Nation's 400 Military Bases Are Raising Crops And Livestock That Are Contaminated With PFAS Forever Chemicals

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

Tap water contamination is just the tip of the iceberg of ways humans have been exposed to PFAS forever chemicals

Monday, June 6, 2022 - Much has been written about the PFAS water contamination caused by the Department of Defense (DOD) negligently disposing of forever chemicals in firefighting foam, but there may be an even greater source of human health poisoning. Agricultural lands near the nation's 400 military bases, may have been contaminated with PFAS forever chemicals by the water used to raise the crops. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is outraged that for over thirty years, forever chemicals have infiltrated the food chain through the water used to irrigate fruits, vegetables, and livestock. In a recent investigative report titled, "Forever chemicals from military bases may be lurking in agricultural water supplies," the health watchdog group exposed the evidence of crop and livestock contamination they found. According to the EWG, "toxic plumes of PFAS flowing from bases around the U.S. could be contaminating irrigation water, according to our review of DOD records. Studies show that irrigating crops and watering livestock with PFAS-contaminated water may contaminate the plants and animals." The EWG also determined that some of the farms surrounding the bases in question have not been alerted to the dangers of the contaminated water as is required by law. More than 36 military installations throughout the country have failed to notify local farmers about the dangers their PFAS chemical contaminated water poses. Many farms have had to discontinue operations and dispose of their products due to PFAS forever chemical contamination. PFAS cancer lawsuits are one of the only remedies available to those who have been injured by firefighting foam waste.

The military insists that PFAS firefighting foam be used to extinguish petroleum and jet-fuel fires and also that firefighters use the foam to train regularly. The levels of PFAS forever chemicals that have been found on each base are orders of magnitude greater than the levels thought to be safe. Irrigating crops with water contaminated with forever chemicals is a catastrophic health emergency but pales in comparison to what could be the levels found in the meat of chickens, pigs, and cattle. Animals like these that are eating contaminated feed and drinking contaminated water themselves bioaccumulate forever chemicals to excessive levels. Eating chicken, pork, or beef that has been raised on forever chemical contaminated water is thousands of times more deadly than simply drinking contaminated tap water. Eating fish from factory farms located near military bases, airports, or municipal firefighting stations may also be deadly contaminated. Large predatory fish like Tuna, found in the oceans near military bases, could have the highest concentrations of PFAS forever chemicals of all. Of the greatest concern is for the unborn children of pregnant women who drank PFAS contaminated tap water, and ate contaminated meat, fruits and vegetables. Many have given birth to children that have developed and died from childhood leukemia. The number of children that suffer from autism and other childhood neurological developmental impediments parallels the pollution of the water and food supply over the last fifty years. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, studies indicate that PFAS forever chemicals can cause kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, liver damage, reproductive problems, high cholesterol, hypertension, and immune dysfunction.
