State Municipal Governments Must Tighten Water Safety Standards

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

People may sue the government for failing to warn them that the water they drink may cause cancer

Tuesday, September 20, 2022 - There is a growing movement among environmental protection advocates to establish a standard of zero tolerance for PFAS forever chemicals in municipal and other public water treatment plants and water wells. Most municipalities have set a limit of 10 parts per trillion as the maximum allowable level, but scientists insist that there is no safe amount of PFAS forever chemicals that could be deemed safe. New York State has tested the population and found that most contain some level of PFAS forever chemical below the EPA's threshold. According to SpectrumLocalNews.com in Syracuse, New York, "There is no safe level of exposure in our drinking water. That is why it's imperative that we get these dangerous levels as close to zero as possible." Other dangerous chemicals were also found to be contaminating upstate New York water. "The coalition of clean water advocates applauded the state for applying its current standard for PFOA and PFOS on 23 additional PFAS chemicals, but is insistent that the acceptable threshold of 10 parts per trillion is far too high." The EPA several months ago, issued a health advisory for upstate New York warning that the previous standard is inadequate and that municipalities should shoot for a zero level of PFAS chemicals. "New York's current and proposed PFAS standards are not adequate to protect public health," said Rob Hayes, clean water director with Environmental Advocates. Three months after the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued health advisories concerning drinking water standards, advocates called on state leaders to ensure New York's standards fall in line," according to SLN. New York State health officials continue to drag their feet, however and have done little to ensure they will pull into compliance with stricter PFAS water tolerance.

PFAS forever chemicals leach into the groundwater and contaminate streams and rivers leading to water treatment facilities. Deadly chemicals are produced by unlined landfills that contain Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex waterproof clothing, and Scotchgard stain-resistant spray to name just a few. Another way the local water supply can be contaminated is if a dry cleaning business is remiss about its waste disposal responsibility and illegally dumps used dry cleaning solvent into a local storm drain. Another way the local water supply is contaminated is when local firefighters train using firefighting foam. PFAS forever chemicals contain strong molecular bonds and do not break down when ingested and instead bioaccumulate to levels that can cause cancer. PFAS forever chemicals can cause testicular cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, and other cancer of the digestive tract, reproductive problems, weakened childhood immunity, low birth weight, endocrine disruption, elevated cholesterol, and weight gain according to sources. It may be up to the legal system to exercise consumers' right to file a PFAS forever chemical lawsuit and hold the local municipal government responsible for failing to warn them that dangerous toxins pollute the water supply. People with cancer may wish to consult a PFAS forever chemical cancer lawyer and file a lawsuit seeking compensation for their lost wages, out-of-pocket medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages that may be appropriate.
