Firefighters With Prostate Cancer Sue 3M And Others For Failing To Warn Them

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

Thousands of firefighters in the US have used toxic AFFF firefighting foam to extinguish petroleum fires

Saturday, May 7, 2022 - Water contamination lawsuits continue to pour in against chemical manufacturers 3M, DuPont, and Chemours Company, alleging that PFAS cancer was caused by a firefighter using aqueous film-forming firefighting foam (AFFF) used during training exercises. Lawsuits claim firefighters that used firefighters' foam during regular training exercises developed cancers that now include prostatic cancer according to a recent filing. According to Firefightersclosecalls.com (FFCC), firefighters are suffering from a variety of types of cancer as a result of their exposure to the toxic forever chemicals the product contains. FFCC writes, "A Florida firefighter indicates he developed kidney and prostate cancer after being regularly exposed to aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) used to fight fires, which contained toxic chemicals known to build up in the body and cause several health risks." Renal and testicular cancers have also been reported by fire responders who used the foam. On top of the individual firefighter lawsuits municipal and state governments who were charged with protecting the health of the residents and maintaining clean, drinkable water supplies, have filed suit against the same manufacturers of the toxic foam seeking billions of dollars to remediate local rivers and tap water sources that are now undrinkable. Firefighters' cancer reportedly is a result of coming into contact directly and repeatedly on the skin while using the foam, and also by inhaling the fumes as the fire was being extinguished. AboutLawsuits.com (AL) recently wrote about the travails of an Arizona firefighter who alleges that he developed prostate cancer from using AFFF.

Firefighter AFFF lawsuits are being organized into multidistrict litigation (MDL) in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. MDL is becoming routine for mass tort lawsuits where plaintiffs allege similar injuries from using an identical product, and also those involving complex scientific discovery. Other mass tort lawsuits currently awaiting bellwether trials include those involving paraquat Parkinson's disease and Phillips Respironics sleep apnea machine cancer. Thousands of lawsuits are expected against the manufacturers of AFFF firefighting foam. MDL will enable a single judge to review scientific experts from both sides to determine which ones holds water. Several cases will be tried focusing on the facts and gauging the jury's reactions with as little inflammatory testimony as possible. It is the goal of MDL to encourage a monetary settlement rather than send the cases back to the states from which they came and try thousands of nearly-identical cases separately. A recent example of an MDL settlement is the instance of Bayer AG's Monsanto Roundup weedkiller where 125000 plaintiffs with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and other illnesses agreed to split up about $12 billion the company offered. Federal legislation is currently pending that would allow military veterans and their families access to billions of dollars more in VA PFAS drinking water cancer funding and also eliminate the statute of limitations so that veterans could sue the Federal government for failing to protect them and their families. Forever chemical lawsuits seek monetary compensation against companies that made AFFF and other toxic forever chemicals that have found their way to local tap water drinking supplies in products like Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex waterproof clothing, and also Scotchguard carpet and fabric protectant.
